English Mastiff Temperament, Size & Personality | Muddy Mastiffs
English Mastiff Temperament
English Mastiff temperament is one of the most important things to research before you adopt one of these dogs. English Mastiffs are often called “gentle giants” because of their calm, affectionate, and family-focused personalities. A well-bred English Mastiff should be stable, confident, observant, and deeply loyal to its family without unnecessary aggression.
β
Despite their enormous size, many English Mastiffs are surprisingly sensitive and emotionally connected to their people. They are known for forming strong bonds with children and often prefer staying close to their families rather than roaming independently.
β
At Muddy Mastiffs, temperament is one of our highest priorities. We specifically select for stable nerves, calm confidence, family companionship, and protective instincts that remain manageable and trustworthy in everyday life.
β
It's important to note that adult English Mastiffs temperament is largely a product of the socialization and training they received as puppies. That's why we do Early Neurological Stimulation on all our puppies.
β
In the past we have adopted a few adult Mastiffs that had not received adequate training and socialization as puppies, and let me tell you what. It is not as easy to train a full grown giant as it is to train a puppy.
We've also discovered that some Mastiffs have a higher prey drive than others. For some people this is ok. But if you are looking for a family pet that is going to be around children and small pets or livestock, you need to do extra research on the Mastiff family line you are choosing.
β
Our current dogs are great, but we train an socialize them. It's so important for you to continue proper exposure from the time you bring your new puppy home to ensure a great finished dog.
β
How Big Do English Mastiffs Get?
English Mastiffs are one of the largest dog breeds in the world. Adult males commonly weigh between 180–250 pounds, while females are often smaller but still extremely substantial dogs.
β
However, size alone does not make a great Mastiff. Structure, movement, joint health, and overall balance are equally important in giant breeds. Oversized dogs without functional structure can struggle physically as they mature.
β
Our breeding program focuses on producing giant English Mastiffs that remain athletic, functional, and capable of living comfortably as family companions. Our English Mastiff male line can reach up to 250 pounds. But we don't chase the scale. Instead we select for large bone structure and then keep our dogs fit.
β
Are English Mastiffs Good Family Dogs?
English Mastiffs are widely loved as family companions because of their calm temperaments and protective instincts. While they are naturally imposing dogs, most well-socialized Mastiffs are gentle with children, affectionate with their families, and surprisingly laid back inside the home.
β
Many Mastiff owners describe them as “couch potato giant breeds” because they often enjoy relaxing quietly near their people after exercise and playtime.
β
Because of their size, early training and socialization are especially important. Giant breed dogs should learn manners, confidence, and calm behavior from an early age.
β
Extra care should be taken with small children because Mastiffs are so large they can knock them over accidentally. Even a wagging tail can be painful. They aren't being bad. They are just big.
β
Obviously we run an English Mastiff kennel and will continue to do so when we have small children. We will just make sure all time together is adequately supervised until the kids are big enough.

Muddy Mastiffs
Our program combines elite, nationally competitive bloodlines with strong, consistent foundation dogs to produce balanced, high-quality English Mastiff puppies in central Pennsylvania. We are proud to own our third generation of English Mastiff females, with a strong focus on preserving and improving our maternal bloodlines. We breed to the AKC standard, selecting for exceptional size, structure, temperament, and long-term function.
β
But we go the extra mile. Many large and giant breed show dogs struggle with natural whelping and maternal instinct. Our lines are carefully selected for natural whelping ability, strong mothering instincts, sound structure, and stable temperaments. Each generation, we aim to bring in an even better English Mastiff stud to improve overall type while preserving the functional traits we admire in the English Mastiff breed.

Early Neurological Stimulation
Otherwise known as the millitary's "Super Dog" program, our puppies receive ENS from day 3 to day 16 to promote a calm temperament and other health benefits.
Nationwide Delivery Available
Door to door delivery to the lower 48 states is available. Flights for puppies with a flight nanny may be available upon request. But since our puppies grow so large, pickup or ground transport is encouraged. Ground transport is done by our family or a trusted friend. We don't send our puppies with strangers.
Show Presence
We are a show kennel, with our first dog show entry in June 2026 and more to follow. We have always bred show dogs to the AKC standard, appreciating the hard work of the famous kennels who came before us. Now we are entering the sport ourselves.
Multigenerational Program
We are proud to own our third generation of female English Mastiffs.
We will continue to hold back daughters from our own line, improving them with each generation through the use of complimentary studs.
β
We are developing that "once in a lifetime" line that has both functional soundness and show structure.
Natural Whelping Focus
We prioritize natural whelping ability and maternal instincts of the mother when we are selecting girls to keep.
A lot of show Mastiffs need c-sections or aren't good moms. We are trying to marry show winning looks with functional genetics.
β
βWe aim to keep girls from a line of moms who can reproduce, whelp, and mother without intervention, just like livestock guardian dogs, farm dogs, and wolves have done for thousands of years.
β
Of course, we will be there for them with medical care if they need us. But the goal is always for them to not need us.
Family Raised Puppies
Puppies are raised by our family in the beautiful Pennsylvania countryside. We are a 3-person team. My name is Alissa. I handle most of the online stuff, pedigree analysis, pairing decisions, and whelping. My husband, Jason, handles most of the customer contacts, and as a combat veteran, he added the millitary "Super Dog" ENS process to our program before it was cool. My dad, Greg, handles most of the infrastructure planning, building, and animal husbandry advice, as he comes from generations of farmers. We all work together to manage the day to day needs of the dogs.
Preservation Breeding Philosophy
Our Mastiff bloodlines traces back to the near extinction of the Mastiff breed. Thankfully it was brought back, and it falls to breeders like us to preserve and continually improve the genetics we manage.
Functional Structure
Although we do breed for muscular/skeletal size, we keep our dogs functional and fit with a 3 step process.
β
-
We do NOT regularly weigh our Mastiffs.
-
We free feed as much healthy hard food as they want. It's boring enough that they mostly just eat when they are hungry.
-
We do not free feed wet food, cooked food, or treats. So even though they get something special almost every day it's hard for them to overeat on calories.
-
We give them lots of exercise in the Pennsylvania mountains.
β
One of the comments we get most on our YouTube is how functional and fit our dogs look.
Apparently it's a thing in the Mastiff world to overfeed a sedentary dog and then brag about how much it weighs.
We would rather select for structural size when we make pairing decisions and then keep our puppies really healthy and fit while they are growing.
Temperament Focus
We select for temperament. Our dogs stand on business when facing a threat. Otherwise they are great with strangers.
OFA Health Testing
We are in the process of health testing our dogs. And we make responsible breeding decisions to support long, healthy lives. CHIC numbers will be provided upon completion.
AKC English Mastiff Puppies From Elite Grand Champion Bloodlines
β
Our current 4-generation pedigrees include a Double Platinum Grand Champion, 2 Silver Grand Champions, 2 Bronze Grand Champions, and a total of 10 Grand Champions and 11 Champions represented throughout our lines. Our dogs descend from some of the most influential Mastiffs in modern show history. And our current stud is line bred from Hollesley Medicine Man, one of the greatest show Mastiffs of all time. He is also line bred from GCH Deer Creek's Cletus II. His dad is a Cletus son, and his mom is a Cletus sister. Read more about our bloodlines, and get a list of individual notable dogs here.
β
Our AKC registered English Mastiff puppies are raised with an emphasis on temperament, movement, structure, and breed quality. We carefully select each breeding to combine the strengths of both bloodlines while improving overall consistency with each generation.
β
Families searching for AKC English Mastiff puppies for sale, champion bloodline English Mastiff puppies, or English Mastiff puppies with papers can appreciate the depth and consistency of our pedigrees.
Apricot, Fawn, and Brindle English Mastiff Puppies

Giant English Mastiff Puppies Raised for Size and Temperament
β
Our paternal line reaches up to 250 pounds at maturity. And while our biggest female is almost as large as our stud, our maternal lines are selected for natural whelping ability, strong mothering instincts, and stable temperaments. We focus on producing giant English Mastiff puppies that remain balanced, athletic, functional, and capable of thriving as calm family companions.
β
English Mastiffs are widely known for their affectionate personalities, impressive size, and protective instincts. Proper structure and temperament are especially important in giant breeds, which is why we focus heavily on long-term soundness rather than simply producing oversized dogs.
β
Families searching for large English Mastiff puppies, giant English Mastiff puppies near them, or family raised English Mastiff puppies can appreciate our focus on both temperament and functionality.
